Interesting Facts About Peterborough

  • Peterborough is a cathedral city and unitary authority area in Cambridgeshire. Originally part of Northamptonshire, it became part of Cambridgeshire from 1974.
  • In 2018 Peterborough celebrated 900 years of its historic cathedral, it hosted its 41st annual beer festival and was temporarily home to Tim Peake’s Soyuz spacecraft, which transported him to and from the International Space Station in 2015-2016.
  • The city is 76 miles north of London, on the River Nene which flows into the North Sea 30 miles to the north-east.
  • Peterborough is one of the UK’s 4 future city demonstrators and home to the country’s largest cluster of environmental businesses. Through its smart city programme it’s changing the way urban systems work and creating the UK’s environment capital.
  • Some Peterborough residents say it’s easier to just say they’re from Cambridge when people don’t know where it is – or ‘just north of London’ if their geography is questionable.
  • In some places nearby, the land lies below sea level, for example in parts of the Fens to the east of Peterborough.
  • Situated by the River Nene, the Key Theatre is the perfect choice for a cultural fix and offers a range of shows including dance, live bands and community arts productions.
  • The revamp of the market square has improved the choice of eateries, and the new fountains are worth seeing.
  • The original name of the town was Medeshamstede. The town’s name changed to Burgh from the late tenth century, possibly after Abbot Kenulf had built a defensive wall around the abbey which was dedicated to Saint Peter; eventually this developed into the form Peterborough.
  • The Cresset Theatre plays host to a diverse mix of live entertainment including music, theatre and comedy – and the likes of Al Murray and Jimmy Carr have graced its stage.
  • Many locals have fond memories of summers at the Lido – its opening is the unofficial sign locally that summer has begun.
  • Peterborough has a history which could have been the inspiration for Game of Thrones: it is shown by its original name Medeshamstede to have possibly been an Anglian settlement before AD 655, when Sexwulf founded a monastery on land granted to him for that purpose by Peada of Mercia, who converted to Christianity and was briefly ruler of the smaller Middle Angles sub-group. His brother Wulfhere murdered his own sons, similarly converted and then finished the monastery by way of atonement.
  • Peterborough’s award-winning Queensgate Centre has over 90 stores, including John Lewis, Superdry, Primark and Fat face, and is complemented by independent boutique outlets in the adjoining Westgate Arcade.
  • The museum building was a hospital at one point, among many other things, and is considered my many to be the most haunted place in the area.
  • Peterborough boasts an abundance of beautiful open space. With 2,000 acres of park land, stretching out for 11 km from the city centre, Nene Park is easily accessible and a great place to burn off some energy.
  • Hereward the Wake rampaged through the town in 1069 or 1070. Outraged, Abbot Turold erected a fort or castle, which, from his name, was called Mont Turold: this mound, or hill, is on the outside of the deanery garden, now called Tout Hill, although in 1848 Tot-hill or Toot Hill.
  • The wonderful open countryside of the Fens and ‘John Clare Country’, and beautiful parks around the city, provide natural open spaces to explore too. Central Park, a Victorian creation just a 10 minute walk from the city centre and a stone’s throw from University Centre Peterborough’s campus, offers tennis courts and a beautifully maintained, peaceful park.
  • The Peterborough Chronicle, a version of the Anglo-Saxon one, contains unique information about the history of England after the Norman conquest, written here by monks in the 12th century. This is the only known prose history in English between the conquest and the later 14th century.
  • A gravedigger called Old Scarlett, whose portrait can be seen above the west door of Peterborough Cathedral, is considered a folk hero. He died in 1594 at the age of 98, having spent much of his life as the sexton at Peterborough Cathedral; having buried two monarchs, he has also been suggested as the inspiration for the gravedigger in Shakespeare’s Hamlet.
